The new media and blogosphere have a generic reference to the old school distributors of the news, the three Major TV networks, CNN, the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, etc. The have generically called the MSM (Main Stream media). It is somewhat of a derogatory reference because, you can compare the coverage on any political, economic, social, or worldwide event and the phrase, tone, talking points, and perspective would be very similar. Bush lied, is stupid, and corrupt. Republicans are sexist, racist, bigot, and homophobes. The military is evil, can do not right, murders innocent civilians, etc.
Conservatives finally had a voice when Rush Limbaugh was widely syndicated in 1987 or so. I know the National Review has been around since the '60. But it's distribution was so small. It was essentially a niche publication. The internet became widely available. Fox News started. Conservative publication became more widely distributed. Conservative talk radio took over the talk airwaves. And then the blogs started to shape opinion. In the old days, the MSM would cover someone, smear and destroy them, and move on to the next victim with hardly a bump on the road.
Now, people can strike back. Radio talk shows, talk debate shows, and other media outlets will allow the victim to speak out, unfiltered, unedited, and directly to the viewer. No edited 10 second soundbite. It's not parity, but it is a chance to strike back.
The MSM response, blatant slanted, uneven, biased coverage. They used to just ignore the other point of view. Now they have to more than just attack, they must dis-credit it. Destroy it, run over it. The MO is attack, smear, and run. Just like a gang drive-by shooting. Each of the old media organizations are like ghetto street gangs. They are all fighting over the same shrinking resources. They have to get more and more dramatic, vicious, sensational, and vindictive. Like a street gang. And their weapon, a drive by. A quick deadly, unfocused, attack. If there is collateral damage, oh well. By at the same time demanding the heads of the military, who kill some innocent civilians in the heat of battle. The demand accountability of everyone, but themselves. Think of CBS memogate coverage and the rigged exploding truck expose by NBC.
